MARTIN TILLMAN
A Year in Zurich

A pinching sorrow caused by meets and losses
Is like a wind that’s tearing
The last shriveled-up leaf off the tree...

An exposed sincerity inheres in this music, when nothing can dissemble a very strong emotional experiences. There is no need whatsoever to hide them as far as all the life long -- from the moment of birth up to this very moment -- consists of them, and this very moment, inestimable and unique shall never come again. This is the music created by a man who’s not afraid to uncover his inward life since love and romanticism inhere in him.

Martin Tillman’s music is very visual. It depicts February when an ice-field is sparkling brightly in sunset rays. And a silent dark forest is visible in the distance. And one would like to go on walking along this endless plain in the winter silence and cold which is chilling to the marrow. Walking where to? Maybe, to a lonesome airport building from where one could fly away to a warm sea and a bright blue summer sky which are attracting you with warmth and insouciance. Or maybe there is no need to leave this place for anywhere because this winter desert, an obscure forest darkening at the skyline seem to be genuine events which will never appear again. And the warmth which you keep inside will not let the surrounding chilling cold spread around…

The album “A Year In Zurich” narrates of Martin Tillman’s period of life in Switzerland. This music is very European in spirit. It is suffused with fragrances of Alpine meadows and smart views of distant mountains which serve as a background for neat houses with brick chimneys and rooftop verdant gardens. It is a place for solitude and deepening in your own reality which turns out to be immense, boundless and not entirely comprehensible.

Martin Tillman proved himself not only a brilliant performer but a talented composer as well. His piano expresses the slightest nuances of feelings. This is a quite new stage in the creative work of Martin Tillman who concerns himself with the piano music. One takes a true delight in sounding of the album. And it is not by chance since the album “A Year In Zurich” as well as all Martin Tillman’s earlier works were produced by a brilliant master Tom Vedvik. Maybe, even so the album is being heard from the first chords to final ones without taking a breath.

As compared with Martin Tillman’s previous projects “A Year In Zurich” has more nuances and semi-tones. This album is more delicate and intellectual than other works of the composer. And infinite feelings and emotions inhere in it. You are just deep in them and feel everything that troubled the composer the year he had settled down in Zurich.

While hearing this album you feel the things which remain imperishable. These are love and tenderness expressed in full in Martin Tillman’s music.

The music only is destined to repress the sorrow,
The silence only will remedy the madness
They two are right along together:
The silence and the music.
They are right along with you…
